Political Activism at a National Level

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with 39,000+ members. It works as a state/church watchdog and is a voice for freethought (atheism and agnosticism).

They have an ACTION CENTER to help you send messages to your elected officials (national and sometimes local) on key votes. Visit often or sign up for email alerts.

Visit the FFRF legal page to learn more about their activism and legal victories or to report a State/Church Violation. Check their FAQ page before submitting a violation to see if it is an issue they are already working on or that has been ruled upon already.

Triangle Freethought Society (TFS) is a chapter of FFRF and regularly hosts talks by FFRF representatives. You can view our recent program meetings with lobbyist Mark Dann and FFRF legal team members Rebecca Markert and Liz Cavell on our YouTube page.

The American Humanist Association (AHA) was founded in 1941 and is located in Washington D.C. AHA advocates progressive values and equality for humanists, atheists, freethinkers, and the non-religious. The AHA has over 34,000 members and supporters and more than 225 local chapter and affiliate groups across the country. TFS is an affiliate group of AHA.

In 2006, AHA launched the Appignani Humanist Legal Center (AHLC) as its legal arm. The AHLC’s team of attorneys, through trial and appellate litigation, amicus activity, and other legal work, provide the zealous advocacy that humanists and others need to defend constitutional rights and strengthen the wall of separation between church and state. You can report State/Church violations to the AHLC.

TFS regularly hosts talks by AHA representatives. You can view the most recent presentation by Emily Newman on our YouTube page.

American Atheists (AA) has protected the absolute separation of religion from government, raised the profile of atheists and atheism in our nation’s public and political discourse, and educated Americans about atheism since its founding in 1963. TFS is one of more than 230 affiliates of AA.

Visit the AA Legal Center to learn more about their work, their victories, and to submit a State/Church Violation. Visit their State Legislation Tracker for NC specific cases and to sign up for alerts.

TFS regularly hosts talks by AA representatives. You can view the most recent presentation by Allison Gill on our YouTube page.

Americans United (AU) is a religious freedom advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1947, AU educates Americans about the importance of church-state separation in safeguarding religious freedom.

AU focuses on advocacy, policy, and litigation. You can learn more about their campaigns on their Get Involved page.

The Secular Coalition for America (SCA) advocates for religious freedom, as guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and works to defend the equal rights of nonreligious Americans. They represent 20 national secular organizations and hundreds of local secular communities. They work with allies in the faith community to combine the power of grassroots activism with professional lobbying to make an impact on the laws and policies that govern separation of religion and government — or the improper encroachment of either on the other.

Visit their Action Center to learn more about their current initiatives and to sign up for action alerts.
