“I wonder how many other nonbelievers live around here?”

— The 2007 question that started it all

Triangle Freethought Society FAQs

I just stumbled onto this page. What’s…TFS?

The Triangle Freethought Society (TFS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2007.

We are dedicated to building a secular community of individuals, family, and friends—working and playing together with reason and compassion as our guides.

Wait, did you say 501(c)3? Does that mean membership is tax deductible?

It sure does. Membership is a donation and is tax deductible. You can also make donations when the mood strikes.

Triangle…so you’re just for Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill?

And the surrounding towns and unincorporated areas, too. If you’re close enough to come to events, we’re happy to have you! The smaller towns may have more need of our brand of community.

We want to support the region from A to Z . . . or maybe that should be from Apex to Zebulon. We are your community whether you're in Cary or Wake Forest, Wendell or Morrisville, Knightdale or Carrboro, Butner or Holly Springs, Rolesville or Garner, Fuquay-Varina or Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Hillsborough, Mebane, Pittsboro, or even Saxapahaw!

Are you part of any national organizations?

TFS is a chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and an affiliate of American Atheists and of the American Humanist Association. (And those three organizations are members of the Secular Coalition for America.)

Local membership in TFS does not automatically grant membership to these organizations, but we highly encourage joining the national groups that match your focus.

Membership in both TFS and FFRF is required to participate in TFS elections (Board and Officers).

Do I have to join TFS to attend your events?

No, membership is highly encouraged, but not required with some rare exceptions (like our end of year Festivus celebration). We do ask that non-members and non-current members make a small donation, if they can, for some events which cost TFS money to put on.

However membership and donations are what fund TFS. There are no salaried employees at TFS, it is entirely volunteer based. Donations (membership and otherwise) are used to pay expenses (such as this website), host events, order books for sale at events, pay honorariums for speakers, and other miscellaneous operating expenses.
